Christensen Takes Win While Hansen is First Rookie.

For the second day running at Silverstone the Formula BMW Europe competitors put on a display of thrilling and matue racing. This time it was Denmark’s Michael Christensen (Mü cke Motorsport) who took a dominant win, but the rest of the podium was the same as race one with two British drivers, Kazeem Manzur (Josef Kaufmann Racing) and Rupert Svendsen-Cook (Raikkonen Robertson Racing), second and third.
When the lights went out polesitter Christensen made no mistake and pulled away from the field into a lead he was never to lose. He was followed by Manzur and Svendsen-Cook, who also stayed in those positions. However, behind them it was Sweden’s Timmy Hansen (Mü cke Motorsport) who made the best start in the Rookie class and from eighth on the grid was fifth by the end of lap one, with fellow Rookie, Robin Frijns (NL/Josef Kaufmann Racing) three places behind him despite starting in front of him.
The battles down the field were fast and furious with gaggles of as many as eight cars separated by fractions of a second. One battle that ended in a collision was between Ollie Millroy (GB/Motaworld Racing Europe Ltd), George Katsinis (GR/Eifelland Racing) and Olivier Lombard (FR/Eurointernational). On lap four the coming together saw Millroy’s car roll while Lombard was stuck in the gravel and Katsinis was able to get back to the pits. Luckily Millroy’s car was put back on its wheels by the marshals and the driver was able to walk away unhurt. This incident brought out the Safety Car and stopped the progress of Christensen, who by that point was three seconds in the lead.
However, when it pulled in a couple of laps later he made a great re-start and continued to power away and had a lead of over five seconds when the chequered flag came out at the end of lap 12. Although he was never in danger of being overtaken the battles behind were still fast and furious.
Felipe Nasr (BR/Eurointernational) again had the task of getting from 23rd on the grid for the second race running, and also climbed up 15 places. Hansen leading the Rookie class was also having a great battle with Daniel Juncadella (ES/Eurointernational) and the Swede won this by a great overtaking move on the final lap.
1st - Round 6: Michael Christensen (DK/Mü cke Motorsport): I just took the lead from the beginning from pole, held it to the finish and even with the Safety Car managed to keep everybody behind me. It means a lot to me to win this my second race of the year. Race 1 was a good race for me but we had a little confusion over the radio. I saw Manzur make a mistake and overtook him. I thought there were yellow flags so waited for the team to tell me if I had to let him pass me and they told me great, great, great and I heard it as wait, wait, wait. I was so sad about that.
2nd – Round 6: Kazeem Manzur (GB/Josef Kaufmann Racing): This was great. The car felt quite good, although I couldn’t keep up with Michael I have got the most points out of anybody this weekend so this is really fantastic. I feel very good now going to the Nü rburgring, a track I love, and I just now want to go one step higher on the podium and I shall be very happy!
3rd – Round 6: Rupert Svendsen-Cook (GB/Raikkonen Robertson Racing): I am just delighted. If somebody had said coming into this weekend I would get two podiums I would have thought they were pulling my leg. From the start of the year we had with only six points coming into the weekend and now going away with two podiums is fantastic. The team is great and since September last year they have put so much effort in as we really wanted to do well this year. We weren’t rewarded for our efforts at the beginning of the year but now I can repay them for their belief.
5th – Round 6 – Top Rookie: Timmy Hansen (SE/Mü cke Motorsport): I took Juncadella finally after that long fight. I felt I was faster almost everywhere, but not enough to overtake. However, on the last lap he left three metres on the inside up the hill towards Stowe and I put my front wing in as I was on the inside. I was also trying to keep Nasr behind at the same time I wanted to overtake Juncadella. It was a hard job, but in the last lap it worked. The starts both yesterday and today were incredible as I just flew off the line. The car was a bit loose in the beginning but in the end it was incredible.
